Gayby: Film Review | MoeJackson

Another movie about a straight girl trying to get pregnant with her gay best friend?s baby? I thought we had retired this storyline? Once it served as fodder for every sitcom from Will & Grace to Modern Family, I think we naturally assumed there was no more to say about this unique parental arrangement.

The bad news is that there is no new way to tell this old story. The good news is that the new movie Gayby manages to, despite all the odds against it, still make a thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience for no other reason than that the two leads played by Jenn Harris and Matthew Wilkas sparkle with the right kind of chemistry to make you forget that this plot is very old hat.

Since these kinds of stories seem to only happen in New York, this too is set in Manhattan where a pathologically single yoga instructor named Jenn (Jenn Harris) looks to her gay best friend Matt (Matthew Wilkas) to help her get pregnant so she can finally have the life she always wanted. Matt is recently broken up with his boyfriend and works at a comic book store so he apparently has no reason to say no (aside: what?s with single gay guys working in comic book stores?). They try the old fashioned way, but it doesn?t go quite as expected, so they decide to try again later. By then, however, a smarmy but attractive house painter has found himself involved with Jenn. Jenn naturally finds herself pregnant and isn?t sure who the father is. Oh, the ironic embarrassment of sperm riches!

The movie works because of the hilarious chemistry between the leads who are a sort of inverse of the average boyfriend-girlfriend relationship and still somewhere in the orbit of siblings. Of course, this is a movie about getting pregnant and raising a family, so it might do well to examine why Jenn is so hell-bent on becoming a mother. There seems to be a lot more going on there than the movie dares to consider. Still, it?s an enjoyable romp through typical romantic comedy fodder.
