Maaloul succeeds Trabelsi as Tunisia football coach

Nabil Maaloul will succeed Sami Trabelsi as coach of Tunisia, the national football federation announced this weekend.

Trabelsi quit after the Carthage Eagles failed to reach his mimimum target of a quarter-finals place at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Tunisia missed a penalty when held 1-1 by Togo in a match they had to win to deprive the Sparrow Hawks of second spot in Group D behind Ivory Coast.

Maaloul, who guided Tunis club Esperance to the 2011 CAF Champions League title, got the nod over fellow former national team star Khaled Ben Yahia.

His first competitive test comes late March at home to Sierra Leone in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.
