Travel Insurance: Necessity, or a Waste of Money?

When you?re planning a trip or vacation, one decision that needs to be made is whether or not to buy travel insurance. If you typically do not purchase travel insurance, you may be unprotected in some ways that have never occurred to you. ?While hopefully you would never need the insurance, you can imagine how devastating it would be to lose your luggage, complete with clothes, electronics, cameras, etc., in the middle of an already expensive vacation. Having to replace a lot of essential items could become a huge financial burden. And that?s just one possible vacation related calamity. Here are a few of the protections that travel insurance provides that you may want to consider the next time you plan a vacation.

  • Trip interruption and cancellation. Say that you?re a couple of days into a 10 day cruise when the ship suddenly experiences mechanical difficulties that result in the journey being abandoned, and passengers having to disembark at the next port of call. Travel insurance will cover a hotel stay while you find a flight home, and may be quicker and more efficient than the cruise ship?s guest services department in finding a way to get you home quickly. Let?s take this a step further ? you feel ill while on a cruise and are taken to a hospital in the Caribbean.? The ship leaves and you have to fly home after being treated.? The insurance would cover the cost of the flight for you to travel back home.? Also, in the event that you have to cancel your own trip due to circumstances beyond your control, for example a medical emergency the week before you?re scheduled to leave, without travel insurance, you?re liable to be ?responsible for hefty cancellation fees at best? at worst, you may completely lose the entire cost of the trip. Travel insurance will cover this for you.
  • Medical expenses. It can sometimes be difficult to get your health insurance to cover you in your own city, let alone when you?re away from home. And when traveling to other countries, you?re pretty much on your own without travel insurance. Nobody likes to think that it could happen to them, but sometimes things happen that we don?t expect. In particular, if your travel plans include potentially risky activities (mountain climbing, deep sea diving, etc.) you?ll want to be covered in the event of a mishap.
  • Job loss. In a shaky economy, you should take precautions against losing the income that is allowing you to plan the vacation in the first place. If you?ve been paying toward and planning a trip for months and that trip becomes an impossibility because you?ve unexpectedly lost your job, the last thing that you need is to be hit with hefty cancellation fees. With travel insurance, you don?t have to face high cancellation fees when your cash flow has just dramatically decreased.

There are other scenarios that can be covered by travel insurance as well, but the truth is that most travelers say that the most important thing that travel insurance provides is peace of mind. There are many different types of policies and coverages available, so make sure and ask questions before you buy, but there is no question that buying insurance allows you to go on vacation with fewer things to worry about.? And isn?t a stress free and worry free vacation the entire point?
