  • Tammy Baldwin becomes first openly gay senator

    Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) beat Republican Tommy Thompson for Wisconsin's open U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday, becoming the nation's first openly gay senator.     Officials from Washington United for Marriage (WUM) declared a 52 to 48 percent win for Referendum 74 on Nov. 7.     In addition to his own election victory, President Barack Obama is reportedly "so absolutely delighted" by the four historic same-sex marriage wins across the country.   • New Hampshire elects first transgender lawmaker

    New Hampshire joins neighboring Maine in making history this Election Night, welcoming its very first transgender lawmaker. The Nashua Telegraph reports that Stacie Laughton, a Democrat, beat out two Republican candidates for one of three seats in the state's House of Representatives in Ward 4. In the interview, Laughton told the Telegraph's Joseph G. Cote that she hopes her victory will inspire other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) candidates in both local and national politics.

  • Gay 'Big Brother' winner pops the question

    As if being a reality show champion wasn't enough, Australia's "Big Brother" winner Benjamin Norris surprised his longtime boyfriend by popping the question.   • Denmark's gay penguins become dads

    In what the Toronto Star describes as an "apparent world first," a Danish zoo's King penguin chick has two "adoptive" fathers. After a female penguin abandoned one of her eggs, zoologists at the Odense Zoo decided to see how two male penguins would handle the egg.     Sara Ramirez has been a a longtime supporter of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, and now, the "Grey's Anatomy" star has re-iterated that love. "I?m always going to support the LGBT community and equal rights for the LGBT community," Ramirez, who plays the openly bisexual Dr. Callie Torres on the hit series, tells Latina.com in a new interview. "That?s going to be with me ?till the day I die and beyond.   • San Francisco offers transgender health care

    In 2007, San Francisco became the first city in the nation to offer universal health care to its citizens through the Healthy SF program, which provides government subsidized health services to uninsured residents. Now, with a unanimous vote of the San Francisco Health Commission, the Healthy SF program will extend to transgender patients. "Until now, Healthy SF excluded care for transgender issues, even when the procedures are medically necessary," said Kristina Wertz, director of policy and programs at the Transgender Law Center.
