'Teen Mom' Amber eyeing prison to stay on TV?

Maybe being on television is the real drug in this case.
Amber Portwood, who is supposed to be released from jail into the care of a halfway house this week after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance, has considered changing her plea so that she can continue shooting "Teen Mom" as much as possible, sources exclusively tell E! News.
It's not as if she wants to be in jail for five years, of course. Portwood's attorney says that it's "not true" that his client would prefer to change her plea and do jail time.
But it is true that the drug court that's allowing Portwood to rehabilitate at the halfway house has ordered the facility not to allow a camera crew inside, and we hear that's got the single mom on edge.
Per the drug court's terms, Portwood must spend eight months rehabbing at Sister 2 Sister Ministries in Anderson, Ind., and, once she moves out, get a real full-time job--i.e. one that doesn't involve reality-show cameras. The judge has warned her that if she violates her strict probation in any way, she'll be locked up -- and she's facing a maximum of five years in prison on the felony drug-possession charge.
The third season of "Teen Mom" is scheduled to premiere April 3. Portwood hasn't been filmed for the show since around Thanksgiving time. She has been in custody since before Christmas.
Portwood said in court last week that she had been under the impression that she would be allowed to live with her grandparents -- i.e., tape her show -- while fulfilling the terms of her sentence (counseling, regular check-ins with the court, etc.), so being ordered to a halfway house caught her by surprise.

A source close to her confirms that the court has been in touch with MTV about what is expected of Portwood over the next year and that the network is being cooperative -- which, according to the insider, is freaking Portwood out because the show has been her sole source of income and most of her savings have gone to legal fees.
Amber decided Saturday that she would rather "do her time now and get it out of the way," the source said. The halfway house is "not the right place for her. She'd have a 10 p.m. curfew and would never see Leah because she wouldn't want to bring Leah around that place."
Baby daddy Gary Shirley currently has primary custody of the child.

"The system doesn't want Amber to succeed," the source said. "She needs to stay in the entertainment industry. There are no jobs in Anderson. She needs to finish her schooling. She can't do all of that with a $7-an-hour job."
By agreeing to the drug court program, Portwood had her case effectively removed from Madison County Circuit Court.
A court clerk confirmed to E! News last week that Portwood was sentenced to at least 18 months -- and a maximum of three years -- in the program and would have to appear at a drug court hearing every week. The Circuit Court would not have to see her again unless "she messes up again," the clerk said.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? An Idaho Republican state senator who had been seen as a political riser has stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations.
Four-term state Sen. John McGee's resignation capped a political free-fall that began last year with a Father's Day arrest.
The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to drunken driving in a deal that erased accompanying auto theft charges in that case. McGee served jail time and paid restitution for a stranger's vehicle that he damaged.
McGee's reputation was further damaged over the summer when The Associated Press reported that records showed he had been making questionable per diem claims that amounted to about $6,000 annually.
McGee submitted his resignation letter Wednesday but did not acknowledge wrongdoing.
Neither details of the claims against McGee made by a young woman on his staff, nor her identity were made public.

More Sneaky Business From Google: It Bypasses Internet Explorer ...
Google does not honor a default privacy setting in Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 Web browser, but instead uses a trick to get around it.
IE head Dean Hachamovich says Microsoft started looking into this last week after news broke that Google was bypassing the default privacy settings in the Safari Web browser on iPhones and iPads. Google was caught by the Wall Street Journal and stopped playing that particular trick, but went on the offensive to try and explain its behavior away.
Like the Safari compromise, the IE9 compromise involves cookies -- small bits of code that Web sites put into your Web browser. Those cookies usually don't contain any personal information, but can keep track if you've visited a particular Web site so you don't have to log in again every time you come back to the site. (Think how annoying it would be if you had to re-enter your Facebook ID every time you came back to Facebook, for instance.)
But ad networks also use cookies to track users across any site where they serve up an advertisement. They do this to make sure they're serving the most relevant possible ads -- and often to track user browsing habits in aggregate to help their advertisers target ads more effecitvely.
IE9 blocks cookies from any site that does not honor a technology called P3P, which lets Web sites describe to browsers exactly how they're going to use tracking cookies.
Google doesn't honor P3P. So its cookies should be blocked.
But instead, Google employs a loophole -- instead of leaving a blank in the spot where it would deliver a P3P policy that only a browser could understand, it delivers a human-readable message saying "This is not a P3P policy!" and a link to this page explaining why Google doesn't like P3P.
If the browser can't understand a P3P message, it accepts the cookie anyway.
So, under the guise of transparency, Google is actually bypassing a privacy setting put in place by a major competitor.
Sneaky!
Like the Safari snafu, this is pretty small time stuff as far as privacy goes. Tracking cookies have been around for years, their behavior is well known, they're easy to block, and the information they deliver -- your browsing history -- usually doesn't contain personally identifiable information.
But still, it's another dumb blunder from a company that is increasingly being watched by government regulators and competitors very, very closely.

This is a statistical term that indicates the finding only has a tenth of a percent chance of being due to a random statistical fluctuation. Such a result would still fall short of being considered a ?discovery,? however, as the field of particle physics has adopted the more stringent five-sigma standard?a one-in-a-million chance.
Another soon-to-come announcement from Fermilab will also illuminate the hunt for the Higgs. On February 23, the CDF experiment will announce a new, more precise result for the mass of the W boson. ?And if you know the mass of the W and the top [quark],? said Roser, ?you will know the Higgs mass perfectly.? While such fellow trailblazers as Michael Jackson and Madonna created video fantasy worlds full of monsters, gangsters, street-fighting men and naughty brides, Houston mostly skipped the drama and stood front and center in her most iconic clips doing the thing that she did best: singing her heart out.
With her model-worthy looks and luminous smile, Houston knew exactly how to telegraph her charm through the TV — and later on the big screen in "The Bodyguard" and three other starring roles — which may explain why most of her most notable videos involve just a bit of perfunctory storyline and focus on her performance.
Here are some of our favorite Houston video moments:
"I Will Always Love You": Is it even possible to come up with a concept for a clip that could match the grandeur and emotional heft of the breakout single from "The Bodyguard" soundtrack? It is, and smartly, that big idea was to focus on an elegantly suited up, forlorn-looking Houston sitting in an empty theater and staring into the distance as she watched clips from the movie scroll by. Houston blasted into the song's towering finale via a quick zoom to her face, eyes closed, and then popping open as she hit the money note. How bad was Houston? She perfectly delivered the titanically tear-jerking drama of the song without ever once getting up from her chair.
"I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)": Whitney did ballads like nobody's business, but she also knew how to throw down, as she did in the "Dance" video, the first single from her second album, Whitney. Dressed in a body-hugging purple dress, towering curly wig and colorful dangly earrings, Houston again focused on singing directly into the camera while a series of dancers showed off their moves in wide-shot cutaways. When it was Houston's time to shine, though, the camera pulled in close to capture that sparkle in her eye and that 1,000-watt beam as she changed through a series of going-to-the-club outfits and mostly shimmied adorably in place.
"How Will I Know": The third single from Houston's debut album was the one that changed everything. The clip helped introduce the singer to a wider audience when it became one of the first videos by a black female singer to earn heavy rotation on MTV. The concept was simple: Whitney in another of her trusty big hair bows and sexy minidresses sang right at the lens while dancers high-kicked and sashayed through a rainbow-paint-splashed maze of a set. All Houston had to do was walk, sing and smile and the rest was history. We're still not sure, though, what was up with that dude in the half-suit, half-wedding dress.
"Greatest Love of All": The final single released from Houston's debut album helped cement the M.O. for the classic Whitney video. Standing on yet another stage in an empty theater, Houston, wearing one of her beloved leather jackets, belts the big ballad with vigor as stage hands work around her, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the star of the show is crushing it right in front of them. While there appears to be some backstory involving Houston making her stage debut as a child, once Whit changes into that beaded white dress and matching chunky earrings to do her slinky saunter to center stage for the big finale ... forget about it.
"I'm Your Baby Tonight": The title track from Houston's third album, released in 1990, is what passed for a high-concept clip from the singer. Dressed in a white suit, with matching bowler and cane, Houston hip-swayed through a Cotton Club-type nightspot before transporting into a Manhattan penthouse. She walked through another mirror into a third scene where she was all three members of a Supremes-style girl group and finally ended up in a beatnik club, her haired pulled back as she rocked chopped bangs. As always, the focus was on images of Houston lip-synching the song's lyrics with attitude as the camera lingered on her luminous skin and smile.

Jennifer Hudson still can't believe it. She still can't believe she was selected to honor Whitney Houston at the Grammy Awards Sunday night.
Also, she's still shedding tears over the legendary singer's passing.
"It was the greatest honor of my life to be able to be the one to pay tribute to Whitney's memory," the Oscar winner tells Us Weekly. "It was from my heart. I haven't stopped crying since she passed. Her family is in my prayers."
Houston, a six-time Grammy Award winner, was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton Saturday afternoon, her body submerged in a bathtub. She's believed to have died from a combination of prescription pills and alcohol, while many are now concerned over the state of her 18-year old daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

Karan's strong woman can borrow from the boys (AP)
NEW YORK ? Donna Karan makes every outfit she designs for a strong, confident woman, and for fall, that woman is comfortable enough in her own skin to wear heavily tailored menswear looks.
Her runway show, held Monday on Day 5 of New York Fashion Week, featured tailcoats and top hats, done on a skewed scale by milliner Stephen Jones. The opening look for her signature label was a gray-and-black pinstripe jacket with a crisp white taffeta bodysuit ? Karan's signature piece ? that was fashioned to look like a button-down shirt.
She also offered long coats with strong shoulders and lapel collars, and a riding jacket paired with pinstripe mohair pants.
Skirts and dresses were mostly long with sharp-cut knife pleats for movement. Tops were mostly slim and tailored with nothing frilly, not even when she added sparkle.
When she got to the finale, however, Karan was fully in touch with her feminine side, sending down a red-hot scarlet-colored, stretch-satin evening gown.
There was a hint of a retro 1920s gangster vibe in both the masculine and feminine silhouettes, especially the accessories including oxfords and spat booties.
"How do you define a woman?" she asked in her notes. "Someone who carries the world on her shoulder. She's never an either/or. She's always and."
Donna Karan's namesake line is her top-tier designer collection, more expensive and luxurious than her younger, contemporary DKNY label.

Two former Bear Stearns managers settle SEC case (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Two former Bear Stearns fund managers, who were acquitted of criminal charges over the demise of their mortgage-laden hedge funds, agreed on Monday to pay more than $1 million to resolve a civil lawsuit brought by market regulators.
The settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was announced on the day a trial on the lawsuit was scheduled to begin in Brooklyn, New York.
Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin were found not guilty of all charges in 2009 in a parallel criminal case brought by the U.S. Department of Justice. The jury rejected prosecutors' arguments that the two men committed fraud by lying to investors about the health of their hedge funds, which were stuffed with securities backed by risky home loans. The funds imploded in mid-2007.
It was the first high-profile criminal prosecution of Wall Street executives stemming from the 2008 financial crisis, and the acquittals were a big blow to the government.
U.S. District Judge Frederic Block must sign off on the proposed settlement with the SEC, which was approved by the agency's commissioners at a meeting last week.
Block told lawyers for each side that he was inclined to approve the deal. But he criticized the proposed penalties as "chump change" compared to the $1.8 billion that the SEC says was lost by Cioffi and Tannin's investors when the two hedge funds collapsed.
SEC lawyer John Worland told Block he thought the deal was a good one, given that the agency is not authorized to sue for damages on behalf of investors.
The judge also chastised the parties for waiting until the last minute to reach a deal in a case that has been pending since 2008. Block said he had set aside three weeks for the trial, which would have covered much of the same ground as the criminal case.
Lawyers for Cioffi and Tannin declined to comment.
Under the settlement, Cioffi will give up $700,000 of profits and pay a civil penalty of $100,000; Tannin will give up $200,000 of profits and pay a $50,000 civil penalty.
Cioffi will be barred from working in the securities industry for three years, while Tannin will be barred for two years,
The men are not admitting or denying wrongdoing, lawyers said.
Lawyers for the two sides said the settlement is centered on a charge that the defendants committed securities fraud through negligence, which does not require either side to address whether the defendants intended to defraud or deceive their clients.
Bear Stearns, on the verge of failure because of losses on mortgage-related investments, was acquired by JPMorgan Chase & Co in March 2008.
The case is SEC v . Cioffi, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, 08-2457.

Uzbek man pleads guilty in plot to kill Obama (AP)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? A man from Uzbekistan who pleaded guilty Friday to plotting to kill President Barack Obama with an automatic rifle claimed he was acting at the direction of an Islamic terror group in his home country.
Authorities said Ulugbek Kodirov had discussed trying to kill the president as he campaigned for re-election because he would be out in public more often. Kodirov entered the plea during a hearing in Birmingham before U.S. District Judge Abdul K. Kallon, an Obama appointee.
Defense attorney Lance Bell said the 22-year-old Kodirov avoided a potential life sentence by pleading guilty. He faces up to 30 years in prison, though Bell expected Kodirov to receive about half that. The judge also told Kodirov that he will face deportation once he's released from prison.
Kodirov pleaded guilty to three counts: Threatening to kill the president, possessing an automatic weapon, and providing material support to terrorists. Four other charges were dropped as part of the deal.
Area Muslims who knew Kodirov were stunned to learn of his plans.
"I really didn't want to believe it," said Ashfaq Taufique, president of the Birmingham Islamic Society. "I knew him. He attended mosque. He never demonstrated any radicalization in his behavior, his words."
U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance said members of the Islamic community assisted in the case against Kodirov.
The plea agreement said that in July 2011, Kodirov claimed he had been communicating with a person known as "the Emir." Kodirov said the person was a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department. Authorities did not reveal the identity of the Emir.
The Emir "asked Kodirov if there was anything Kodirov could do about President Obama since Kodirov was closer geographically to the president than the Emir," according to his plea agreement.
Kodirov and a person who helped authorities discussed possible ways to kill Obama, including from long distance using a sniper rifle.
The agreement said Kodirov became disheartened when he realized how expensive sniper rifles are and realized he lacked the skill to pull off the shot. Kodirov then decided he could shoot the president from a closer distance in public.
"Kodirov said that he did not care if he got shot and killed, as long as he killed President Obama," according to the plea deal.
Kodirov then struck up a friendship with another person in Birmingham who spoke Uzbek, and the two often attended mosque together. The two often looked at jihadist websites and videos on Kodirov's laptop, the agreement said.
On July 11, after the two went to a mosque in Birmingham to pray, Kodirov asked his friend to buy a gun for him so he could kill Obama.
Kodirov told the person he "knew this was what he was supposed to do for Islam," the plea agreement says.
Kodirov was arrested in July.
Bell, the defense attorney, said Kodirov regrets what happened and "accepted responsibility for the charges he pled guilty to."
He was accused of making four separate threats against Obama within a five-day period when he was meeting either with a witness who went to police or an undercover officer.
Vance, the prosecutor, said Kodirov's threats were serious enough that law enforcement officers felt they had to intervene.
"He had developed a plan, he was reaching out to other individuals for aid and acquiring firepower necessary to kill the president," Vance said.
A complaint said Kodirov contacted an unidentified person trying to buy weapons in early July, and that person became a confidential source for the government. Accompanied by the witness, Kodirov purchased a Sendra M115A1 automatic rifle from an undercover agent at a Birmingham-area motel on July 13, when authorities said the final threat was made against the president. The agent also gave Kodirov four hand grenades with the powder removed.
Authorities say Kodirov was in the country illegally because he obtained a student visa but never enrolled in school.
Uzbekistan is located in central Asia and was once part of the former Soviet Union. It is slightly larger than California and the vast majority of its population is Muslim. Islamic terrorists have been linked to sporadic violence in the country for more than a decade, according to the State Department.

HBT: O's apologize to Korea Baseball
Earlier this week, the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) filed a complaint with MLB alleging that the Orioles broke protocol by signing 17-year-old left-hander?Kim Seong-Min last month. The Korean Baseball Association (KBA), a separate organization, went a step further by banning Orioles? scouts from attending local games. Well, tonight the Orioles responded.

Anti-Gay Bill Advances in St. Petersburg - Robert Amsterdam
On the same day that Vladimir Putin called for the Orthodox Church (who by the way believe his stint as Russia?s ruler to be nothing short of a miracle) to have a stronger presence on state-run television channels, St. Petersburg lawmakers have passed the second reading of a bill that, if made law, would fine anyone advocating gay/lesbian/other non-heterosexual relationships, effectively outlawing gay pride parades,?public displays of affection, and even conversations about homosexuality or transgender topics. ?The bill will have its third and final reading this Wednesday. ?Today?s reading was marked by a protest outside of a parliament building, at which a number of demonstrators were arrested. ?St. Petersburg?s gay rights? group, ComingOut, condemned the bill for aiming to ?legalise discrimination?, and warned that totalitarianism and prejudice go hand in hand (Iran is a case in point). ?A similar law has already been passed in Astrakhan.

After spending the first seven seasons of his pro career in the Astros? farm system Roger Clemens? son, Koby Clemens, became a free agent and has signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays.
Clemens was Houston?s eighth-round pick in 2005 and has never been considered a top prospect, but did put up some big numbers in the low minors. He hit .345 with 22 homers, 45 doubles, and 121 RBIs in 116 games at high Single-A in 2009, but hasn?t done much since leaving the notoriously hitter-friendly California League for tougher competition.
Last season he split time between first base and third base at Triple-A, hitting .234 with 16 homers and a .756 OPS in 126 games at age 24, and then was banned from playing winter ball in Puerto Rico after leaving his team without notice.
Koby is unlikely to reach the majors, but Roger won back-to-back Cy Young awards for the Blue Jays in 1997 and 1998 before they traded him to the Yankees for David Wells.
