Currency Swaps

A currency swap is structurally different from the Fx swap. In a typical currency swap,counter-parties will

(a) Exchange equal initial principal amounts of two currencies at the spot exchange rate.

(b) Exchange a stream of fixed or floating interest rate payments in their swapped currencies for the agreed period of the swap.

(c) Then re-exchange the principal amount at maturity at the initial spot exchange rate.

Sometimes, the initial exchange of principal is omitted. Sometimes, instead of exchanging interest payments, a 'difference check' is paid by one counter-party to the other to cover the net obligation. The currency swap provides a mechanism for shifting a loan from one currency to another, or shifting the currency of an asset.

Over-the-Counter Foreign Currency Options

A foreign exchange or currency option contract gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy (or sell) a specified amount of one currency for another at a specified price on (in some cases, on or before) a specified date. Options are unique in that the right to execute will be exercised only if it is in the holder's interest to do so. That differs from a forward contract, in which the parties are obligated to execute the transaction on the maturity date, and it differs from a futures contract, in which the parties are obligated, in principle to transact at maturity, but that obligation easily can be, and normally is, bought out and liquidated before the maturity or delivery date.

Bankruptcy court trustee wants to sell Casey Anthony's life story

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The trustee overseeing Casey Anthony's bankruptcy case has filed a motion to sell the rights to her story so she can pay her debts.

In a motion filed Friday in federal court in Tampa, trustee Stephen Meininger asked Judge K. Rodney May for permission to sell the "exclusive worldwide rights" of Anthony's life story.

Anthony, who is now 26, was acquitted of murder in 2011 in the death her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Anthony has never told her side of the story, despite intense media scrutiny of the case.

During a meeting with creditors in her bankruptcy case in Tampa on March 4, Anthony said she was unemployed and hasn't received any money to tell her story. She said that she is living with friends and that those friends ? and strangers who send her gift cards and cash ? help her survive.

But Meininger, through his attorney, said he thinks that her story has value and should be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

One man, Meininger wrote, has already offered to pay $10,000 for Anthony's life story so he can prevent her from publishing or profiting from it in the future.

Meininger points out that the man's offer is not contingent on Anthony's cooperation or participation. Anthony's life story ? including details about her childhood and the disappearance and death of Caylee ? is referred to as "the Property" in the motion.

"Due to the intense public interest in Debtor and the Property, the Trustee believes that there will be interest from others in purchasing the Property," the motion reads.

An auction, with bidding, is the "best way to maximize the value for the Estate and its creditors."

A call to David Schrader, Anthony's bankruptcy attorney, was not immediately returned.

One New York publisher said Monday that Anthony's story has the potential to be worth seven figures.

"If she had the goods, and she was really going to spill the beans of what happened, particularly if she's not guilty, that's pretty big," said Eric Kampmann, the owner of Beaufort Books. "If she knew who the murderer was for example, that would be huge. That would be the biggest news story of the year."

Kampmann, who said he has been in contact with a member of Anthony's legal team but has no deal in place, is no stranger to controversial books. His publishing house reissued OJ Simpson's book, originally scheduled for release by ReganBooks, an imprint of HarperCollins. But "If I Did It" was dropped in response to widespread outrage. ReganBooks founder Judith Regan was later fired and her imprint disbanded.

A federal bankruptcy judge then awarded rights to the book to the family of murder victim Ronald Goldman to help satisfy a $38 million wrongful death judgment against Simpson.

Beaufort Books, based in New York, published "If I Did It" with Simpson's original manuscript intact and commentary included. The Goldman family called the book Simpson's confession ? the same description Regan offered in justifying the original publication. The Beaufort edition has sold more than 100,000 copies.

Kampmann said enough time has passed since Anthony's trial that her story could be marketable.

Anthony filed for bankruptcy in Florida in late January, claiming about $1,000 in assets and $792,000 in liabilities. Court papers list Anthony as unemployed, with no recent income.

Her listed debts include $500,000 for attorney fees and costs for Jose Baez, her criminal defense lawyer during the trial; $145,660 for the Orange County Sheriff's office for investigative fees and costs; $68,540 for the Internal Revenue Service for taxes, interest and penalties; and $61,505 for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for court costs.

The filling also states that she is a defendant in several lawsuits.

Jews in Greece mark WWII Nazi deportation

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) ? Jewish residents of this northern Greek city on Saturday marked the 70th anniversary of the roundup and deportation of its Jews to Nazi extermination camps during World War II.

Several hundred people gathered at Thessaloniki's Freedom Square, where the first group of Jews was rounded up by the occupying German forces on March 15, 1943.

The crowd held a moment of silence, then marched to the city's old railway station, where the first trains departed for the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex. A short ceremony was held at the station and flowers laid on the tracks.

Speakers included the city's mayor, Yannis Boutaris, and Holocaust survivors.

"The commemoration is an honor for the city of Thessaloniki. But some people look upon this era nostalgically and are bringing back the old Nazi symbols," said David Saltiel, leader of the city's Jewish community. He was referring to the emergence of the extreme right-wing Golden Dawn, a party with neo-Nazi roots that swept into Parliament for the first time in June on an anti-immigrant platform.

On March 15, 1943, 2,800 Jews departed for the concentration camp.

"We were packed 80 to each train wagon ... When we arrived, they sent a number straight to the crematoriums and kept some of us for work. We were beaten often by the guards," recalled Holocaust survivor Moshe Haelion.

Another survivor of the camps, Zana Santicario-Saatsoglou, described how for many years she was unable to tell her story. "My children used to ask me what that number on my arm was," she said, referring to the identification number tattooed on Auschwitz-Birkenau prisoners. "I told them it was my old phone number in Thessaloniki."

By August 1943, 46,091 Jews had been deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Of those, 1,950 survived. Fewer than 5,000 of the 80,000 Jews living in Greece survived. The majority, after returning from the camps, emigrated to Israel.

Today, the Jewish community in Thessaloniki, which until the early 20th century formed a slight majority of the city's inhabitants, numbers fewer than 1,000.

The Jews of Thessaloniki were mostly Sephardic ones, who immigrated to the city, then part of the Ottoman Empire, after 1492 to escape persecution in Spain.

WILMINGTON, Del. ? Exactly half of the movie theaters on U.S. military bases around the world are going dark.

The other half are stepping into the future, to the delight of military moviegoers who live on a base where demand continued to warrant a silver screen. The chosen 60, like most commercial theaters, are going digital.

For Debra Larregui, an administrative assistant in the 436th Airlift Wing Safety Office who watched the James Bond flick "Skyfall" at Dover Air Force Base, Del., the change to digital doesn't seem to be that big of a deal ? just getting to keep the theater was good enough news.

"It's a big, huge benefit," said Larregui, who, as an Air Force brat whose husband wore the blue for 20 years, has watched films on bases all over the world. "You could take your kids to the theater and not worry about the prices."

At Dover, that's $2.50 for children and $5 for adults. It's a bit more for 3-D movies, but substantially less than a ticket at a movie out on the town.

Had Dover not been chosen to make the switch, the selection for Larregui and other patrons might soon have become mighty sketchy.

By mid-year, said Judd Anstey of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, which operates military movie theaters, 35mm prints will become scarce and, eventually, completely unavailable.

Nearly 80 percent of the nation's 39,908 commercial movie theaters had made the switch from 35mm to digital as of last fall, USA TODAY found. But in that same report, the newspaper said that Hollywood's switch to digital was imperiling small theaters that couldn't afford the new digital projectors.

That's not a problem for Dover ? in part because of demand, but also because of the unique funding setup for on-base theaters.

AAFES operates on nonappropriated funds and is largely self-sustaining ? less than 2 percent comes from tax dollars, Anstey said.

While overseas AAFES theaters show movies about a week after their release, those in the continental U.S. can offer only second-run movies ? those that have already had their big run at the box office.

Since this begins about six weeks after a film's commercial release, he said, "this requirement limits both pricing and attendance."

So the command decided to analyze its theaters to determine whether demand warranted spending the roughly $120,000 it would take to convert a theater to the Dolby-surround, 7.1 digital format.

For Dover, the numbers were favorable. So were the financial arrangements. AAFES is paying the entire $7.4 million cost of the 60 conversions, Anstey said.

On-base movie fans, AAFES says, will enjoy not having to occasionally put up with scratched or torn films, as second-run flicks sometimes get bruised during their initial runs. James O'conners is enjoying not carting two 35-pound film canisters up the stairs at a time.

O'conners, once the projectionist at Fort Hood's Palmer Theater, became a "supervisor" when that theater went digital last fall. He spends less time in the projection booth and more on other theater chores, such as pitching in on concessions.

"It's like runnin' a DVD player," said O'conners. "Press the play button, make sure everything's going. There's no adjusting of lenses to focus it no more. There's not very much manual stuff that you have to do with the new projector."

Those huge reels of film? Gone. "It comes in on a hard drive," he said. "It's about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide."

You might think the sort of person who would sign on to be a projectionist might miss the manual, old-school part of the job ? loading and threading the films, performing the "changeover" from one reel to the other, and just hearing that ubiquitous clicking sound as the film moves through the projector.

O'conners, who's been showing films for about four years, isn't very old school. "No, not really," he said with a chuckle.

China's new premier rejects U.S. hacking claims

BEIJING (AP) ? New Chinese Premier Li Keqiang dismissed hacking accusations against China as "groundless" on Sunday and said his government was committed to strong ties with Washington.

Referring to allegations that China's military was behind massive hacking attacks on U.S. entities, Li reiterated Beijing's statements that China is a major target of global hackers and opposes all such criminal activity.

"I think we should not make groundless accusations against each other but spend more time doing practical things that will contribute to cybersecurity," Li said in his first news conference in his new role.

Li is the highest-ranking official to comment on the hacking claims made by U.S. cybersecurity firm Mandiant that provided a detailed picture of alleged cyberspying carried out by a People's Liberation Army unit based in Shanghai.

Li said that despite their differences, conflict between the world's largest and second-largest economies is not inevitable as long as the countries respect each other's major concerns and manage their differences.

China's new leaders "attach great importance" to relations that meet the "fundamental interests of people in both countries and serves the global trend of peace and development," Li told reporters at the traditional premier's news conference that follows the close of the annual legislative session.

China-U.S. ties have weathered a series of crises over the past year over dissidents, Chinese trade practices, opposition to Chinese investment in the U.S. and ? most recently ? hacking accusations. While basically stable, political ties are seen as lagging behind the economic relationship, with two-way trade hitting almost $500 billion last year, and China's new president, Xi Jinping, isn't expected to meet President Barack Obama until an economic summit in Russia in September.

Following Xi's elevation, Li was appointed premier last week, with running China's economy his main responsibility.
