PINK ARMY: Mother, Lawmaker Fight Skeptics | WHOTV.com ? Des ...

About a dozen women dressed in pink shirts feel like they face two deadlines as they walked the steps of the Iowa Statehouse Tuesday. One is very personal. One is political. First, the political: this week marks lawmakers? first self-designed ?funnel week?, which means most bills have to pass through at least one legislative committee by week?s end to have a realistic chance of becoming law this session.

The personal part of this fight involves a battle with cancer. The women call themselves the Army of Pink. They are pushing lawmakers to pass a bill that?would require doctors to give women their breast density when they send out their mammogram results.

Bridget Pargulski, a Johnston homemaker, who battles Stage 3 breast cancer, helped to lead the effort. She said, ?One?group of women, 60% of us, mammographies?do a great job of finding cancer and it has saved thousands of lives. The other group of us, 40% mammography does not do a good job at all.?

Pargulski?said doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told her she likely had cancer for five years, yet her past four mammograms detected no presence of a tumor. Pargulski believes that is because she has dense breast tissue, which makes detecting tumors in a routine mammogram more difficult.

Representative Helen Miller, a Fort Dodge Democrat, joined the women in a news conference. Miller said her family?s history makes her a strong supporter of the women?s efforts. She said, ?I?m?one of those women who had dense breasts, who?s had two aunts who?ve passed away from cancer. I have two sisters who are cancer survivors. My sister constantly tells me..she just had a birthday last week and she?s always??well, I made another one, and Helen,?I want you to know that it?s not a matter of if, but when.?

The group cites research collected on this website.

But the Iowa Medical Society opposes the group?s efforts to make doctors notify patients of their brest density. ?Dr. Marygrace Elson, who is a member of the Iowa Medical Board of Directors and a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist at UI Hospitals and Clinics, released this statement:

?There is no consensus within the scientific community on the relationship between breast density and cancer risk, no uniform method for assessing breast density and no clinical guidelines recommending additional patient screenings solely based on high breast density. The notification language mandated in this legislation?holds the potential to frighten women receiving the report of high breast density into seeking additional, higher-level screenings which are not medically necessary.?In other words, the science just isn?t there to support what?s in this bill.?

As of Tuesday evening, the bill had not passed a house committee.

Chow Yun Fat and Liam Neesom Star in Film on Chinese Railroad Workers

The influx of movie goers in China has caused Hollywood to take notice and it is no surprise then that 20th Century Fox has decided to work with China Film Group to produce Tragedy of the Chinese Laborers <?????>. The film stars 57-year-old Chow Yun Fat (???) and Liam Neeson as railroad workers in the United States in the 19th century.

The Emerging ?Chollywood?

Over the past few years, the Chinese film industry has experienced an unprecedented boost. China has already replaced India as the world?s second largest film producer. No matter how much Westerners may scoff at the Chinese censorship system, they cannot ignore that China has become the world?s second largest box office, after the United States.

Last year alone, the Chinese spent more than 17 billion RMB on movies, with half of the sales spent on Hollywood movies. As such, this has attracted Hollywood and worldwide film companies eager to woo Chinese movie-goers.

Tragedy of the Chinese Laborers

In the 1980s, Taiwanese director King Hu (???) had already expressed interest in filming the controversial treatment of Chinese railroad workers in the United States in the 19th century. Because of the lack of funds, filming was delayed and eventually the film was not made because of his passing.

In 2005, it was reported that Fox obtained the filming rights and has invited award-winning Irish actor, Liam Neeson to take part. However, filming was shelved due to funding problems as well as the lack of special effects support. Last year, Fox invited China Film Group to invest in Tragedy of the Chinese Laborers. The latter agreed, with the condition that the majority of filming to be done in China.

The struggles of the Chinese railroad laborers in the United States in the 19th century may finally come to light with the materialization of the movie. With a budget of $150 million USD, the movie will be directed by critically acclaimed Indian director, Shekhar Kapur, who was behind the Academy award-winning film,?Elizabeth: The Golden Age, starring Cate ?Blanchett.

Tragedy of the Chinese Laborers will recount the trials and tribulations of Chinese and Irish workers who were sold to the United States for the construction of railroads in the 19th century. The story will revolve around 5 Chinese laborers who were tricked to participate in the construction of the California Union Pacific Railroad for free. Fat Gor will play the leader of the Chinese workers, who not only has to fight for their rights, but also face off competition from the Irish workers, headed by Liam Neeson.?The movie will also star?Fan Bingbing?(???) as Fat Gor?s love interest.

In preparation for filming to commence in August this year, China Film Group is ready to start preparing a railroad in northeastern China for the movie. Director Shekhar Kapur will also fly to China early to oversee the arrangements. Filming will take place in the United States and Canada.

Shi'ite fighters rally to defend Damascus shrine

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Shi'ite fighters from Iraq and Lebanon have joined fellow Shi'ite Syrian gunmen to defend a shrine south of Damascus which they fear is threatened by Sunni rebels battling President Bashar al-Assad.

The presence of Shi'ite combatants from neighboring states - confirmed by sources in Iraq and Syria and highlighted in videos glorifying their mission - underlines how Syria's conflict is inflaming sectarian feelings in the region.

Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas brigade, named after a seventh century martyr son of Imam Ali who is considered the father of Shi'ite Islam, was formed several months ago and fights mainly around the shrine of Sayyida Zeinab on the southern outskirts of the Syrian capital, a source close to the brigade said.

Abbas's sister Zeinab is buried in the gold-domed mausoleum, intricately decorated with blue ceramic tiles and surrounded by a white marble courtyard which used to fill with pilgrims before the uprising against Assad erupted and grew into a civil war.

The source said the brigade was set up in response to the perceived danger to the shrine and mosque from Sunni fighters who desecrated other places of worship for Shi'ites, who are a minority in Syria.

"They are there for one purpose and that is to defend the shrine," he said, adding they were operating independently of Assad's forces around the capital.

He said Iraqi fighters at Sayyida Zeinab were motivated partly by the desire to prevent a repeat of the wholesale sectarian violence that followed the 2006 attack on the Iraq's Shi'ite Imam al-Askari mosque, blamed on al Qaeda, which cost thousands of lives, both Sunni and Shi'ite.

Syria's conflict has already attracted hardline Sunni fighters some from Afghanistan, Libya and Chechnya, many of whom consider Shi'ites infidels and their shrines as non-Islamic symbols of paganism which should be torn down.

A video posted online two months ago showed Sunni Muslim rebels burning a husseiniya - a Shi'ite religious site - in Syria's northern Idlib province, one of several recent attacks against properties associated with religious minorities.

An Iraqi Shi'ite official said Iraqi Shi'ites - some of whom had lived in southern Damascus since fleeing Iraq's own violence - started to mobilize last summer in response to rebels in the area he described as "hardliners and Salafis", referring to the ultraconservative school of Sunni Islam.

Rebels "wanted to destroy the Sayyida Zeinab shrine and hundreds of Iraqi Shi'ites who were already living in Syria stood up to them and fought back," he told Reuters from Iraq.

"Now they are more organized, under the Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas Brigade," he said. Sources close to the brigade say it is divided into smaller groups named after the 12 Shi'ite imams and is mainly composed of Iraqi, Lebanese and Syrian Shi'ites.

The brigade is still made up mainly of Iraqis, the official said, though he said they came to Damascus individually and not under the auspices of the state or any organization.

Rebels accuse Lebanon's Hezbollah, an ally of Assad, of fighting alongside his forces. The group denies the accusations and says only that its loyalists are fighting in border villages to defend Shi'ites there.

    "CUT OFF THE HANDS"

The brigade has put out two videos that play heavily on the historical feud between Sunnis and Shi'ites. The first, called "O Zeinab", shows the shrine damaged with a chandelier on the floor. "We will cut off the hands of the perpetrators," says a chant on the soundtrack.

The videos mix recent footage of the current conflict around Sayyida Zeinab with scenes from a drama portraying Abbas's death in 680 AD at the hands of the Damascus-based Umayyad Caliph Yezid's army at the battle of Kerbala, in modern-day Iraq.

Those images reinforce the sense of a conflict that transcends state borders. While Shi'ites form barely 2 percent of the population in Syria, they are a majority in Iraq and Iran and a strong force in neighboring Lebanon - countries where sympathy for Syria's Shi'ite and Alawite minorities runs deep.

"The Umayyad descendents are back with their injustice, O Zeinab," chants an Iraqi-accented voice in the first video, released in December.

Fighters in camouflage uniform, their faces blanked out, fire rocket-propelled grenades and shoot automatic rifles during apparent street battles. Some take up sniper positions, and all of them seem well-trained. Destruction and piles of rubble can be seen in front of closed shops.

It ends with a black-clad Zeinab addressing Yezid. "You will not succeed in erasing our memory," she says.

In the second video released this month the chanter says: "We will not allow (Zeinab) to be captive twice," a reference to her capture after the battle of Kerbala.

One of the fighters filmed in the first video is shown in the second, this time with his face uncovered - because he has been killed in battle, becoming "a martyr defending Zeinab".

At least six fighters are seen shooting from a roof while others are seen praying inside the shrine. The tone of the video is more defiant, the "enemy" now mentioned by name.

"If we receive the order ... we will turn things upside down and burn Damascus," it says. "You Free Army (the rebel army name) get ready. We are coming, we are coming."

The anger on display is mirrored on social media by Sunni fighters and reflects the deepening rifts across Syria between majority Sunnis, Alawites and Shi'ites who are being driven further and further apart by the violence.

In a video posted on YouTube last July a Sunni commander warns residents of the northern village of Binnish not to deal with Shi'ites in neighboring villages, warning that even trading bread or other goods with them is punishable by death.

"The people of Foa (village) are Shi'ites and they are our enemy across the globe. Understand this. Whoever deal with them even if it is a grain, a single grain of wheat, his punishment will be the same," the rebel commander says, to the chants of Allahu Akbar (God is greatest).

"I swear, I swear, I swear - if it is proven that a man from this village is dealing with them I will kill him at the door of the mosque," he said.

Why Every Office Should Switch To Walking Desks

lifespan_treadmilldesk_hero angle with computer_300dpiMan was not meant to spend all day hunched over a dimly lit screen; disturbingly high incidences of obesity, joint pain and fatigue is our body’s not-so-subtle way of saying it wants to get up and move around. After piloting a walking desk, a standing desk attached to a treadmill, for a month, I’m convinced they should become the default workstation. Immediately, my daily calorie burn jumped 30.7% and I lost 3lbs and a percent of body fat in a week. I also experienced less joint pain throughout the day. What Is a Walking Desk? The Lifespan TR-1200-DT5 places a square standing desk atop standard size treadmill (74″). Instead of a large front dashboard, a relatively discrete control panel for speed is attached on the body-facing side of the desk. Speed varies from .4 MPH to 4MPH (about the pace of a light run) Getting Started With Slow But Steady Adjustments Migrating to the walking desk was relatively easy: I just plopped my laptop and monitor down on the squarish 46-inch desk and got to work. The intuitive interface lets you choose several tracking mechanisms for calorie burn and distance. The first day I couldn’t walk more than an hour at a time before I felt like I was losing concentration. It also takes some getting used to walking like a tyrannosaurus rex (arms tucked-in and elbows bent at the keyboard). At first, I would work for an hour walking, and then sit for 30. The first day I walked about 4 hours. Now I only rest once a day. It also took a bit to develop the musculature in my upper back to support raised arms for hours on end. This is no longer a problem. After experimenting with different speeds, I now vary between .8 and 1.2, picking up speed in the late morning early afternoon to offset the nature fatigue that preceeds the morning news rush. Every-so-often I have to learn on my elbows or straddle the rails to take a break. Burning More Calories While its intuitive to think that walking for an extra 5-8 hours a day would burn more calories, recent scientific evidence suggested otherwise. A study of “exergames”, video games which require full-body movement, found “no evidence that children receiving the active video games were more active in general, or at any time, than children receiving the inactive video games,? concluded the research

(AP) ? A smiling, playful 3-month-old polar bear cub has made its public debut at the Buffalo Zoo in western New York.

The fluffy white cub was introduced Friday as the zoo announced the next phase of fundraising for a new $18 million polar bear exhibit. About $4 million is still needed.

The Buffalo Zoo says it's one of only two zoos in North America to have polar bear births in 2012.

The cub is still too small to exhibit but she's visible via closed-circuit television at the zoo on weekday afternoons.

Congressional Democrats Urge Supreme Court To Strike Down Part Of DOMA

WASHINGTON ? More than 200 congressional Democrats are urging the Supreme Court to overturn a key provision of the federal law against gay marriage.

The lawmakers are filing a friend-of-the-court brief with the justices Friday, asking them to strike down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA. The provision denies all federal benefits to same-sex couples.

The Democratic brief is meant as a counterweight to House Republicans, who have been defending DOMA in court ever since President Barack Obama ordered the Justice Department to stop doing so. The president believes the measure is unconstitutional, but it will remain federal law unless it is repealed by Congress or overturned by the court.

"There simply is no legitimate federal interest in denying married same-sex couples the legal security, rights and responsibilities that the federal law provides to all other married couples," the lawmakers said in a statement accompanying the brief.

Democratic lawmakers leading the push are House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler and Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy.

No Republicans signed the congressional brief.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case on March 27. One day earlier, the justices will take up a separate but related case on the constitutionality of California's gay marriage ban.

The Obama administration, which is a party in the DOMA case but not in the California case, filed its own friend-of-the-court brief Thursday asking justices to overturn the California ban.

Mass. woman sues FedEx over marijuana delivery

PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) ? A Massachusetts woman has sued FedEx, claiming the company mistakenly sent her a package containing seven pounds of marijuana, then gave her address to the intended recipients, who later showed up at her door.

Maryangela Tobin of Plymouth said in the suit filed Feb. 12 that by disclosing her address, the company violated state privacy laws and put herself and her children in danger.

"I feel like the safety of my daughters and myself was invaded and it makes things complicated," she told WBZ-TV. "I walk into my house first every time, my kids don't."

Tobin said she thought the package was a birthday present for her daughter, because when she opened it, she found candles, pixie sticks and peppermint. There was also something she thought was potpourri, but it was marijuana.

Tobin said that about an hour later, a man knocked on her door looking for the package, while two men sat in a vehicle in her driveway, waiting. She said she didn't have it, and bolted and slammed the door. Tobin claims FedEx gave out her address, which led the men to her home.

Police made an arrest, but Tobin said now she's worried about retribution.

Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx said it doesn't comment on pending lawsuits.
