NFL Combine 2013: Power Ranking the Top 50 Players

1 of 51

NFL

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL Scouting Combine is an interesting exercise. It combines some really important aspects of player evaluation with some things I would almost consider gimmickry for NFL fans, that serve almost no real purpose in sorting out who the top players are. I wrote earlier about what I consider the things that matter and the things that don?t during the NFL scouting combine for me. But I understand that for the casual college football fan who?s primary focus is the NFL, this event holds much more value.

But the question for these casual fans becomes, who to pay attention to? And what does the combine mean for the top players? For some it?s really meaningless. There?s nothing some of these players can do to hurt or help their draft stock short of a total breakdown during the process. But for a borderline prospect, say close between a 1st and 2nd round pick, there could be something like a medical check or an interview that makes all the difference. Having said that, history tells us one thing. The league loves speed. So, if you are a prospect who can get into that magical 4.3 and below range, you are almost assured to improve your stock with some teams from just that single drill.

Here are my top prospects from the 2013 NFL Combine from 50 all the way to No. 1. The best of the best among the 330+ players who will be among those drafted in April. Check the list out and let me know what you think in the comments below.

MTV Twitter ?Hack? Prank Was A Risky Ploy For Attention

Look-at-Me1-460x230MTV has officially acknowledged that early reports of their hacked Twitter account was, in fact, a prank. An hour ago, MTV's twitter account began tweeting naughty comments about musicians (screen shots below) and fooled a few media outlets into reporting the prank. A spokesman for MTV tells TechCrunch in an email "the hack was pre-planned in the spirit of corporate camaraderie with our sister network, BET [Black Entertainment Television]".

In info age, Belgian diamond heist is a throwback

(AP) ? At a time when many robberies take place at the click of a mouse, a group of jewel thieves has shown there's still a potential payoff for old-fashioned criminals willing to use disguises, planning and pluck to nab their loot.

Monday's theft of some $50 million worth of diamonds from the tarmac of Brussels' international airport is a "huge blip on the radar," said retired FBI agent Bill Rehder, who spent more than three decades on Los Angeles' bank robbery squad.

"You can almost liken it to the meteor that hit in Russia," he said, referring to the space rock which exploded last week over the city of Chelyabinsk, injuring hundreds. "These things happen so infrequently, but when they do happen it's a huge story."

It's also the type of story that complicates trends that have seen many crimes ? particularly those targeting banks ? jump from the world of brandished weapons and ransom notes to a universe of Trojan software and password-stealing computer programs.

In several Western countries, robberies have fallen as banks have installed bullet-proof glass, access-control vestibules and cash boxes rigged with paint or glue. Rehder said that, in the United States, tougher sentencing for criminals and societal changes have also led to a drop in bank robberies, which shrank from 8,516 in 2001 to 5,086 in 2011.

That trend has been echoed across the Atlantic, with the British Bankers' Association recording an even more dramatic fall in the number of raids, from 232 to 66 in the same period. Europe-wide figures also show a decrease in the number of bank robberies.

Meanwhile, cybercriminals have stepped in to steal some of the money their gun-wielding colleagues have left behind.

Global figures are hard to come by, but the amounts in play can be huge. In 2010, the FBI announced the unraveling of an online organization that had raked in roughly $70 million through a vast network of hackers, money mules, and front companies. Dozens were arrested across the U.S., Britain, and Eastern Europe.

ATM skimming, in which criminals surreptitiously rig cash machines with card readers and cameras to harvest debit card numbers, is another threat.

Doug Johnson, the vice president of risk management at the American Bankers Association, said that while the average U.S. bank robber could expect to make out with $3,000-4,000 from each theft, a skimmer made 10 times that amount with every successful hit.

Even as criminality mutates to fit the new realities of online finance and cashless wallets, spectacular thefts like the one in Belgium carry a special air of romance, Rehder said.

"This will catch the imagination of the public, no doubt about it," Rehder said, explaining that the use of bogus police vehicles to rob a plane right as it prepared to take off fit right in with the mystique of 1960s heist movies, released long before many of today's online criminals were born.

And security experts said that capers in the vein of "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968) or "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) ? elaborate schemes involving the surgical extraction of jewels, rare artwork, and cash ? were likely to keep popping up well into the information age.

"As long as we have hard currency and value in precious stones and precious metals, we're going to have people who will try to take it," Rehder said.

Or, as Johnson put it, "it's frankly difficult to create virtual robbery of diamonds."

Save Leverage - The fans speak

The team and Hurley survive the explosion

Last week OnTheBox writer Alastair Newport wrote a damning review of the opening episode of the fifth season of Leverage. Within minutes the comments erupted in outrage, our Twitter was overwhelmed and it became clear that Leverage fans are a special kind of loyal.

Here in their own words, crowdsourced from Grifters across the globe and put together by Ali Kien and Jeannean Sword are the reasons we should #SaveLeverage:

Leverage is cancelled. So what? It?s just a show, get over it. This is what networks, critics and non-believers have tried to cram down fans throats for the past month. Apparently, they never understood the significance this show had in today?s society and on the shows fans. Leverage premiered in December, 2008 as society called for change and relief from the economic turmoil that sent shockwaves across the world. Leverage provided viewers with heroes, a group of misfits who came together and rose up against evil corporations to fight for the little guy.

Over the past five years, Leverage provided a fun, fast-paced action dramedy that was suitable for audiences of all ages. There was no gratuitous sex, over the top violence, or inappropriate dialogue. Families could sit down together and enjoy an hour of entertainment and lose themselves in these characters. Each fan had their favorite; whether it was the Mastermind, Hacker, Hitter, Grifter or Thief, we relished in watching each of them grow season after season.
Through trials and tribulations this group of loners became a family and so did we.

What made Leverage different was that it was not just another formatted crime drama, reality show or crude comedy. It was unique, it told stories that people dealt with everyday. Losing their job, getting foreclosed on, getting swindled; these things happen and the common man has nowhere to turn. Leverage touched the lives of the viewer like no other show could. We laughed, cried, cheered, and shouted ?Dammit Hardison!? For that brief moment every week we forgot our troubles and escaped. Leverage saved us from ourselves and restored the hope that one day the corrupt would be brought to justice.

Leverage was also distinctive in that the actors, writers, producers and crew reached out to fans through social media. They let us into their world, which is so often protected by other shows, and let us be a part of their family. Through Twitter, Facebook, and Google+, fans from all over the world could come together and talk to the cast and crew, argue over the best episode; or debate the controversy when Eliot (Christian Kane) cut his hair.

The fans (Grifters) tirelessly supported Leverage; rallying to gain renewals each season and promoting the show until carpel tunnel set in. This resulted in the Fifth season premier being the #1 cable show in the coveted 8pm timeslot. Everyone was actively involved and engaged and that impacted the shape of the show.

Since cancellation, Leverage has gained in popularity as seen by the increase in likes on their Facebook page and the multiple new pages that have sprung up to ?Save Leverage?. Leverage won the People?s Choice Award making history as the only cancelled show to ever win. In the ?Best of 2012? poll Leverage received 1,297,589 votes, out voted only by ABC?s Juggernaut Castle.

Fans continue to show their support by signing petitions; writing, emailing and tweeting
networks asking that Leverage be picked up for another season; and voting in every poll created in order to save our show. We all know TV is about making money. Leverage has an intensely strong following; with proper promotion and a consistent timeslot Leverage could prove to be a real cash cow to some lucky network.

While the reasons Leverage deserves another chance are truly endless, the main point is: there are wolves in the world and sometimes the bad guys are the only good guys you?re gonna get.
