Bringing an old or new friend along with you is one of the best ways to adapt to a retirement home. By allowing pets, senior communities cultivate a loving, home-like environment in which you need not feel lonely. Plenty of senior homes will let you live with a pet without any additional charge. When asked who the most popular members of their community are, many residents mention pets first.

You, like Elveda Elznic, may only consider living in a retirement home that permits you to bring your beloved pet with you: ?When choosing a retirement community, I never looked at any other because my little Shi-Poo Jenny could live here with me. She loves the attention from the residents and staff, and enjoys playing with her poodle friend Tequi, who lives here too.?

Here are three keys ways that pets benefit retirement home seniors?

1. Easing the Transition

May Parry, the social supervisor at the Briton House, believes that pets are an important way to ease the transition from your own home to a retirement community. ?A pet is something familiar, part of home life and really part of your family,? she notes.

Jane Jones, the community relations manager of the Grenadier Retirement Residence, agrees. ?[Pets] are their family. Why should they move in and have to give them up? It isn?t fair.?

2. Dealing with Your Emotions

A recent study at Goldsmiths College in London found that dogs can show empathy. They have a strong sense about when someone, particularly their owners, is in distress and react accordingly. Other studies suggest that cats can also be empathetic.

Numerous pet owners find that a non-judgmental, unwavering companion is the most effect way to recover from any of life?s hardships.

Mildred exaplins, ?When my husband died, I had my cat, Wilbur. I cried a lot. But, when I was crying, Willy was always there. He just sat on my lap and looked into my eyes like he knew I was upset. I don?t know what I would have done without him. I never felt alone thanks to Wilbur.?

Wheeler simply appreciates Tequi?s friendship. ?Tequi is my constant companion. He sleeps at the foot of my bed every night.?

3. Forcing you to Exercise

In 2009, the Vanier Institute revealed that pet ownership can improve your health by forcing you to be active. Dogs especially require a lot of exercise. As Mary Wheeler quips, ?Right now, he [Tequi the dog] is sitting under the table wondering when I am going to take him for a walk.?

Simon adds, ?It?s very easy to just enjoy the nice amenities of a beautiful retirement home and sit around. My dog, Molly, has kept me from being lazy and got me outside. She needs to walk a lot and I have lost a good deal of weight just by taking her for good, long walks twice or even three times a day.?

He didn't. In fact, he didn't come all that close. And now we must wait until Monday ? for the heats of the 200-meter butterfly ? to begin to answer the question no one was asking before these Games began.

What happened to Michael Phelps?

From start to finish, the 400-meter individual medley was Lochte's race. He could have swum with the gold medal already around his neck, and he still would have finished first. By a lot. Billed as a showdown between two of the greatest swimmers ever, Lochte swam against only invisible competition ? the golden world-record line on TV that just beat him to the finish.

Slightly ahead of the field after 100 meters of freestyle, Lochte needed rearview mirrors to see it after the backstroke and breaststroke. By the time he finished, the swimmer in second place was three body-lengths behind.?

And that swimmer was not Phelps. It was Brazilian Thiago Pereira, who summed up the evening nicely in stating, "I didn't expect this."?

Nor was Phelps the next one to touch the wall. That was Japanese Kosuke Hagino, a 17-year-old who, last year, finished third in the world junior championships.?

Then came Phelps, 0.34 seconds later.?

Of all the sportsmen who walk this earth, Phelps is perhaps most deserving of a mulligan and a measure of patience from fans. Then again, the man laboring in Lane 8 didn't look remotely like Michael Phelps.

Brazilian Luca Martin got a good look from Lane 7 next door, and he didn't think it looked like Phelps, either.

"It's so strange to see Phelps like that," he said.

Phelps didn't disagree. "I was trying to find a gear that I couldn't find," he said. "I have swum better races, and I have been better prepared. It was a very frustrating finish."

It is that second-to-last sentence that must raise some doubts about Phelps's assumed victory lap in London. "Better prepared" could have been engraved into each of his 14 gold medals. Yes, Phelps has uncommon physical gifts, but his greatest gift is his mental strength ? and that was founded upon his certainty that his rigorous training meant he never would have to utter, "I have been better prepared."

In May, when Phelps was still trying to prove that he could come back from several indifferent years of training, he told a media summit: "Hopefully, I didn't get too far behind that I can't make up the difference."

He appeared to dispel those doubts at Olympic trials, when he beat Lochte in three of four races ? and while he lost to Lochte in the 400 IM then, too, he raced it in 4:07.89. Had he matched that Saturday, he would have taken silver by nearly a second.?

So what happened?

Before the Games began, Phelps said how he was going to enjoy these Games. "I'm having fun," he said in a news conference. "It's a question of: How many toppings do I want on my sundae?"

Perhaps Phelps, the ultimate grinder, can't turn into a cherries-on-top sort of swimmer overnight.?

Before the Games began, Phelps said he was going to have to manage his emotions in this, his last meet. "There are going to be the last competitive moments in my career," he added. "It's big."

Perhaps he's letting those emotions get the better of him.?

Or perhaps he just had a bad day at the pool.

To be honest, we didn't know what a bad day at the Olympic pool looked like for Phelps before now. There had never been any.?

So now we're left to wait, and wonder. Did that man in Lane 8 really kidnap Michael Phelps, or is Superman simply waiting in the phone booth?

Mayor Bloomberg's Breastfeeding Initiative

According to a CBS report, Mayor Bloomberg's -"Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative" will help hospitals educate mothers?on the benefits of breastfeeding over baby formula. The program is also?sponsored by the World Health Organization which recommends that mothers
breastfeed for six months.

As a mother who breastfed her children for an extended period of time, I
completely support breastfeeding our babies, however, that is entirely a
mother's choice and one which should be made in cooperation with the baby's
pediatrician and her own physician.

Mayor Bloomberg is now playing the role of pediatrician and neo-natal
specialist. While it is great to encourage breastfeeding, the reality is that
some women may not want to breastfeed their baby and it is their choice.
Local government should not force them to do it.

Thus far, 27 of the city?s 40 hospitals have also agreed that they will
document a medical reason for every bottle of formula that a newborn receives.
Essentially, a mother is now forced to breastfeed unless she has a medical
reason for not doing so. This is just bad policy - ?pure and simple.

I attended a baby shower today for my niece Mary,
hosted by her sisters. I blogged about her gender reveal party here,

where we learned she was expecting a baby boy.

Baby boy's name is Saylor James. Unique, don't you think?

His momma has had that name picked out for years for her first son.

China cancels waste project after protests turn violent

QIDONG, China (Reuters) - Chinese officials canceled an industrial waste pipeline project on Saturday after anti-pollution demonstrators occupied a government office in eastern China, destroying computers and overturning cars.

The demonstration was the latest in a string of protests sparked by fears of environmental degradation and highlights the social tensions the government in Beijing faces as it approaches a leadership transition this year.

It was also the second cancellation of an industrial project this month, as officials buckle under pressure from protests.

Zhang Guohua, city mayor of the eastern China city of Nantong, said in a statement the city would terminate the planned pipeline that would have emptied waste water from a Japanese-owned paper factory into the sea near Qidong.

The decision came hours after about 1,000 protesters marched through the city of Qidong, about one hour north of Shanghai, shouting slogans against the pipeline.

"The government says the waste will not pollute the sea, but if that's true, then why don't they dump it into Yangtze River?" Lu Shuai, a 25-year-old protester who works in logistics, said while marching.

"It is because if they dump it into the river, it will have an impact on people in Shanghai and people in Shanghai will oppose it."

Several protesters entered the city government's main building where they smashed computers, overturned desks and threw documents out the windows to loud cheers from the crowd. Reuters witnessed five cars and one minibus being overturned.

At least two police officers were dragged into the crowd at the government office and punched and beaten enough to make them bleed.

Environmental worries have stoked calls for expanded rights for citizens and greater consultation in the tightly controlled one-party state.

The outpouring of public anger is emblematic of the rising discontent facing Chinese leaders, who are obsessed with maintaining stability and struggling to balance growth with rising public anger over environmental threats.

Such protests "suggest that the middle class, whose members seemed willing to accept in the 1990s that being able to buy more things equaled having a better life, is now wondering whether one's quality of life has improved, if you have to worry about breathing the air, drinking the water, and whether the food you're eating is safe," said Jeffrey Wasserstrom, of the University of California Irvine.

The protest followed similar demonstrations against projects the Sichuan town of Shifang earlier this month and in the cities of Dalian in the northeast and Haimen in southern Guangdong province in the past year.

"We are aware of the Shifang experience, and if it worked there then it may work here. We have a responsibility to protect our home," said one student who declined to be named because he said the government had threatened retribution against anyone who spoke to the media.

The leadership has vowed to clean up China's skies and waterways and increasingly tried to appear responsive to complaints about pollution. But environmental disputes pit citizens against local officials whose aim is to lure fresh investment and revenue into their areas.

Program or Be Programmed author, CNN columnist and Frontline documentary director Douglas Rushkoff announced on his blog today that he's taken a job with Codecademy, a company that offer free online programming courses entirely through a web-based interface. Rushkoff writes that he is joining the company as an evangelist much in the same capacity as Vint Cerf's role at Google as a "net evangelist." Rushkoff won't just be evangelizing Codecademy, but the concept of "code literacy" in general.

Mint Condition Fitness: The Back Pain Solution

By the time you finish reading this article, more that 30 million Americans will experience some form of acute back pain. By the end of this year, roughly half of adults in America will have at least one symptom of back pain. Back pain is a terribly complicated issue because there are so many factors that play into its origins. It affects almost all of us, yet we clearly do not have a handle on how to best manage it. It comes up for a while, we seek help, sometimes get relief, and then at some point in the future, we very likely experience the same issues if not worse. The worst part about back pain is that it is rarely due to traumatic events. It would be one thing if the only time we had back pain was after falling off a ladder or playing tackle football, but for most us, it just happens seemingly without cause. We were fine yesterday, and today we are in pain! Today, I would like to explore some of my philosophies behind the origins of back pain, and give a few prescriptions for how to avoid it as best as possible. Cause & Correction #1: DIET! This is probably not what you would expect to be the first and most important thing to correct when it comes to back pain, but when it comes to chronic issues, there is no better place to start than this. Diet can negatively affect the stability of your spine in two ways. First, if you have a poor diet, you are probably overweight and have a constant load on your spine. The weight puts a strain on your back, especially when it is concentrated around your midsection. You and your back have to work pretty darn hard when you have that extra weight pulling on your midsection. The second but more important reason diet can be a problem results from the effect that inflammatory foods can have on your ability to stabilize your spine. The reason I feel this is a bigger problem is that you do not have to be overweight for this situation to lead to back issues. Regardless of weight, if you eat foods that cause bloating, intestinal irritation, or leads to inflammation in your joints, you will be INCAPABLE of bracing your core. This means that no matter how you think you should pick up something, you will not be able to brace your core for the lift. With no ability to use your core, your back must take the entire load. This is a bad situation because your back muscles were not designed to help you lift; they were designed to stabilize your spine. Because of this, when you try to use them to extend your back to lift something, they are structured in such a way that they will actually take about 10-20x the load of the weight you are lifting. So when you go to pick up your 50lb suitcase, the load on your back is more like 500-1000 pounds! Hopefully it is clear that this is not a situation you want to put yourself in. So how to you avoid it? Well the most important thing is to listen to your body. If you feel bloated after a meal, you can be pretty sure that something you just ate does not agree with your digestive system. If you commonly wake up with aches and pains (which is NOT normal, by the way) you can be pretty sure that the diet you are on right now is inflammatory. If you get sick often or have big energy swings, you can also be confident that it is time to reassess your diet. All of these things are indicative of inflammation and gut irritation, both of which can lead to back pain (along with a lot of other health issues). Start here and you will be setting you and yourself back up for success! Cause & Correction #2: Posture & Sitting This is probably the most obvious solution, and yet it is amazing how few people do anything to tackle this problem. Someone suffering from back pain for 20 years can be taking anti-inflammatories, seeing a chiropractor 3x per week, and using heating pads all day but will not spend any time working on their posture. Posture simply means keeping your body in optimal alignment. This should not be challenging, but becomes so when we spend our whole lives sitting. I have written on this subject plenty of times, so I will not spend too much time on this point. Just know that if you have back pain you better start doing some stretching, strengthening, massage, and a whole lot less sitting if you want anything to change. Cause & Correction #3: Inactivity Inactivity is closely tied in with posture, but it is its own issue that must be addressed. This is another recommendation that is made day in and day out for people with back pain but people seemingly do not prioritize it. There is a great quote from one of my favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption.? Hopefully you have seen this film as well (and if not, I highly recommend it!), so I will not go into the context of the quote, but there is a point when the two main characters are talking and one of them says ?I guess it comes down to a simple choice?get busy living or get busy dying.? I love this because this is exactly how it works when it comes to staying active. If you choose to move, you choose to live fully. If you choose to be stationary, you are choosing to literally shorten your life and decrease your quality of life. Our bodies were designed to move for most of our waking hours and without this stimulus, we give our bodies no reason to stay healthy.? So again, it comes down to a simple choice?either get busy moving or get busy dying. Cause & Correction #4: Sleep There are two key points to be made about sleep. First, the better sleep you can get, the more likely you are to stay healthy in general and the faster you will recover from any back issues you may be dealing with. Second, the type of mattress you use can make a HUGE difference in the health of your back. I know there are a lot of people that love their nice soft mattresses, but over time, this can wreak havoc on your back. Your spine needs support as you lie down, and when you have a soft mattress, your body ends up bending into positions that are less than optimal. This cannot only lead to back pain in the morning, but it can also lead to poor posture over time, which in turn can lead to back pain?so it?s hitting you from both sides! In the end, you will get used to a firmer mattress, but you will never get used to a bad back. ? Cause & Correction #5: Fashion This is a short one for the ladies, but it should not be overlooked. Wearing heels excessively is a surefire way to end up having back pain. The problem here is actually not in the heel-wearing itself, but in the adaptation your body makes to having your heels lifted all the time. When this is your norm, you end up putting strain on your back when you are NOT in heels. All of that tightness from your calves pulls along your posterior chain (the whole backside of your body) and puts pressure on your back. This is painful at best and can lead to injury at worst. If you can, try to keep heels for special occasions and try to stay as flat-footed as possible the rest of the time. While this article does not cover every component of the back pain epidemic, I hope that it does give you some insight into things you can start doing today to help get yourself out of pain. There is nothing worse than living your life unable to move freely and without pain, so I hope you find guidance and motivation through this article. It may take time to fully resolve a back pain issue, but when given the alternative of lifelong pain, I would always choose the former.?

Twitter Severs Ties to Instagram: Smart Business ... - Marketing Pilgrim

These past few weeks, Twitter?s been the two-year-old jumping up and down next to mom while she tries to work. They announced targeting for Promoted Tweets, covertly revealed their plans to make a web series and as of tonight, they?re all over the Olympics.

But you know how those toddlers can get into trouble and Twitter has been true to form. On Thursday, the site went dark for more than an hour, the second big outage in under two months. They say it was a server issue and that even their redundant systems failed. I think it?s a conspiracy to test the reaction to a nation left without social media and specific internet services because on the same night, Amazon, IMDB, and Netflix all went down. Coincidence or carefully planned madness?

Or could it be a publicity stunt for the new TV series Revolution which is about survival after a catastrophic event knocks out all the power on the planet?

Call me paranoid if you must, but Twitter also made a move against Instagram this week. They cut the ties to the Find a Friend portion of the Instagram app which seems like it will hurt them more than it hurts Instagram.

Instagram has 80 million users, all of whom could have used the Find a Friend feature to access their pals on Twitter but apparently Twitter doesn?t care. Just like they didn?t care when they cut off LinkedIn.

Twitter?s new stance is, if you want to play with my toys, you have to play in my yard and that?s kind of mean. Some think the Instagram boot is a direct result of their connection to Facebook. Others think that Twitter is planning to release their own photo option to compete with Instagram. Whatever the reason, it?s starting to feel like bad business.

Twitter didn?t get where they are by surrounding themselves with high walls. Social media is about being social and that means sharing with your friends from all over the neighborhood.

I?m a big fan of Twitter, but I?m starting to worry about where this new attitude will lead them. What do you think? Was it smart business to cut off Instagram and LinkedIn, or is Twitter heading for trouble?
