On My Family Tree ? ashleysthought

When I started writing this blog initially, I used to write a lot more about my family. I got some of the best feedback from stories about my?mother and my childhood. After a bit, a few people who read this, that I actually know in real life started emphasizing how my family would feel if they were to read?it. Then I felt bad. I felt like I shouldn?t be having a very public, world-wide laugh at their expense. Most days I still feel like that, but not today. The fact of the matter is that this shit is true. I couldn?t make this up if I tried.

I had received some emails?with questions about what the rest of my family was like and what kind of childhood?I had. This is my family tree.

My Mother

Some?of you have read my earlier posts where I mentioned my mother. People have told me that she would be great for a sitcom or a movie character.?It?s a nice thought, but she actually exists in real life. TV could never capture her. When I was younger, my mother was a very unhappy woman. Truthfully, she?was dealt a really shitty deck of cards. No one?could have played them well. I remember driving with my mother, in a car that had been?sold to her for $500 on the?front yard?of a trailer park, and complaining?about her?smoking with the windows rolled up. It would make me sick and I could tell when I went to school that my clothes reeked. I remember so clearly how she turned, looked at me and said, ?cigarettes are the only joy I have in my life.? I was in second grade, but I knew that meant her life really sucked. I figured if that was the only joy she had I shouldn?t mind the 3 packs she smoked every day. I don?t have a single childhood image of her without?a cigarette in? her mouth. This woman washed her hair with one hand and smoked a cigarette with the other. There are still burn marks on the side of her bathtub. If you?re familiar with my early posts, you also know that she has a tramp stamp and a few other bad tattoos. They are in very poor taste, but they truly reflect her life story. She was a single mother, raising 3 kids that she never hesitated to tell a person were all ?mistakes.? She wasn?t home much because she was out working shitty jobs and making no money. There were lots of boyfriends,?even?a?couple engagements, some stints with drugs and?various?mental health disorders. I was well into my twenties before I realized that she wasn?t as much of a complete bitch, as she was a trooper. I moved out of her house when I was 14 and didn?t really have a relationship with her until the past year or so, after I broke up with my ex. I figured if anyone knew about failed relationships, it was her. I had been out of touch with her for so long, that she had become a completely new and different mom. Mom4GS. She got married to a nice guy, renovated her house and found herself in a career. She really got her shit straightened out and I?m happy for her. Sometimes it?s still weird. I?m thankful I got the chance to meet her again.

My Father

My father is arguably the most hardworking man alive. In fact, he is so hardworking that one day, when I was 8 years old, he went to work and never came back again. He must be putting in a lot of overtime. When he didn?t come home the first few days, I knew that he was gone for good. People always ask if I worried that he had been hurt or kidnapped or something, but usually when that happens people don?t clear out their drawers and pack their bags. It made things really difficult on my mom. His disappearance catapulted the?series of misfortune that was to come in the years ahead. bankruptcy, abusive boyfriends and things of that nature. I had to go to a very exclusive group at my school called, ?Banana Splits.? It was run by the guidance counselor. Any time there were family days or activities, we would get pulled out of the room to talk about our ?feelings.? It was supposed to be discreet, but it didn?t come close. On the last day of school, the counselor let us eat banana splits to replace the dad deficit. That is the best logic I could ever get from it. There were lots of times growing up and even sometimes now, when I could have really used a dad. I still have not seen or heard from him since he went to work that day. It?s been 17 years.

My Older Brother

Ugh, god. What do I say about this kid? Dumb as a rock?no. ?He is my brother and I love him. However, it?s not easy. He is living with an imaginary disease?that causes him to be 17 years old for the rest of his life. While eating with him at a restaurant one time, he had this to say about his diet, ?I only eat once a day because I only?like really unhealthy food. I would never eat a fruit or vegetable. I usually just eat cheese steaks and shit. If I only eat once a day, it?s healthier and I won?t get as fat.? No, he wasn?t kidding. That is probably the most well thought out conversation he?s had in years. He is perfectly happy, approaching 30 and serving soup and salad combos at Olive Garden. I?m still learning to get off his case. If he?s happy, that?s good enough.

My Younger Brother

My younger brother is the nicest, most kind-hearted person who ever called in a bomb scare and got expelled from school. I mean that. He?s an amazing artist and an amazing stoner. He is covered head to toe in tattoos and piercings. People often get this hard ass impression of him, but that couldn?t be farther from the truth. He is really sensitive and loving. When we were in high school,?(pre-expulsion) he cried when our hermit crab died. It?s still buried somewhere in our mother?s backyard. He is still lazy and mooching, but he?s becoming more of a productive member of society. Thank God.

My Maternal Grandparents

My grandfather lived with us much of our lives, though we didn?t see or speak to him that often. I know. This is still a piece that boggles my mind as well. He was a man?s man.?Worked in construction, hung out at?the?Elks and drank a ton of booze. The booze is probably the reason we needed a babysitter even if he was home. I remember staying up late at night when my friends would sleep over and we would have to be quiet so we didn?t bother him. We would wait to see him stumble out of his room inebriated, in his underwear, and scratch his back against the wall, like a bear.?A very drunk bear.?He chewed Red Man tobacco and signed?his?Christmas cards?using his first and last name, never grandpa.?His gallbladder burst and poisoned his whole body about two years ago.?50+?years of hardcore booze ended up killing him. When I think of him,?I feel like I never got the chance to know him as well as I should have, but I still smile and?laugh.??

My grandmother is still alive and well. I believe she owns record-breaking amounts of swishy?jump suits and Reebok sneakers. I lived with her off and on a lot through my life. I was a teenager by the time I realized she had ever been married to my grandfather. They were completely opposite people, I could never imagine them being together. Although my grandmother is very dainty and cute, in an old lady way, she is also much like Stone Cold Steve Austin. It?s almost like she has no emotion at all. She blinks a lot and has very dry skin. She doesn?t cry or say I love you.?Her ring finger on her left hand is missing because when she was on her honeymoon 120 years ago, she was going down a water slide and her wedding ring got caught on a tiny hook that was used to?hinge covers over the slide. She continued down the water slide and when she got into the pool, she had to go back up to retrieve her finger. Medicine then wasn?t what it is today so they couldn?t reattache?the finger. You always know when my grandmother is around because her glove only has 3 fingers on it. She?s always cold. She has spent more than half of her life giving the shocker.

My Paternal Grandparents

It is difficult to mention these two because I only met them twice in my life and it was prior to age 8. They are from Ohio. The first time I met them, we had to make the trip to visit my grandfather in the hospital. He was severely diabetic and due to complications, he was having his leg amputated from the knee down. We got there the day before the surgery. I remember?seeing him for the first time?in a hospital bed and not being able to take my eyes off?the leg. Due to lack of oxygen in the extremity, it was solid black from the knee down. To this day, I don?t think I?ve ever seen anything that scary.?A few years later, we visited for his funeral.?My grandmother is still alive, but refuses to talk to us. I don?t know why, but truthfully I don?t care enough to find out.

My Miscellaneous Brothers

I was about 12 when this boy came knocking on my door, looking for my dad. I had to let him know that we hadn?t seen or heard from him in years at that point. He went on to tell me that he was my brother. A half-brother. What was more bizarre, is that he has the same first, middle and last name as my older brother. This new brother was about 3 years older than my older brother.?Confusing, I know. ?Apparently, my father had abandoned their family as well and this kid came looking for him because he wanted to punch him in the face. This new brother also has a brother. So?I have a grand total of two half brothers. One of which I have still never met.

To top it off, when my mother got married, I gained two step brothers. They are very nice boys who love to hunt/fish/kill everything. It is difficult for me to find common ground with these guys. I use my fall back plan and get them drunk whenever we are together. One of them is getting close to turning 21. The other is still a few years away.

My Drunk Step-Uncle

This gem also came into my family when my mother got married. This guy is perhaps the drunkest?man alive. He?s had two heart attacks. I love seeing him because he reminds me of a cartoon character. He has a blonde ponytail and rosy cheeks. Regardless of season, he is always wearing a sleeveless t-shirt, cut off denim shorts and untied work boots. He has a very bad stutter. On Memorial Day last year, I had gone to a picnic at my mother?s house. Somewhere around 2pm, this drunk step-uncle came screeching into the drive way. He parked on the grass and somehow, fell face first out of the passenger door of his car. When he walked up to the area we were sitting, it looked almost as if he was fighting gravity. I filmed it. After he grabbed a beer and said the N word a few times, he told us why he was in such bad shape. Apparently, the mexicans who live in the trailer across from his had been making a lot of noise and bothering him. He went over to their house to ?cuss them out? and they let their dogs attack him. He explained that he shouldn?t have gone over there after finishing both a 30 pack and a 12 pack that afternoon. That?s 42 beers before 2pm. He has become a wonderful addition to this family tree.

?

You can dispute the accuracy of this if you want, but I don?t have much else to say. This is my family.

Carb Lovers Need Not Fear Colon Cancer | AICR Blog

Obesity, type 2 diabetes and inactivity are all linked to increased risk of colorectal cancer, and all are also linked to insulin resistance. Because the key nutrient that affects our insulin levels is carbohydrates, many researchers have investigated the link between carbs and colon cancer risk.

Now, a new review of the research suggests that carb-lovers need not worry when it comes to colorectal cancer. The amount and type of carbohydrates people eat, and how those carbs effect blood sugar does not play an independent role in colorectal cancer, the analysis found.

The study was published in Cancer Causes Control and you can read the abstract here. It was funded by the World Cancer Research Fund as part of AICR/WCRF?s Continuous Update Project (CUP).

For the analysis, researchers looked at 14 population studies. All studies were prospective, asking participants about their dietary habits and then tracking whether they were diagnosed with colon cancer.

The studies investigated colon cancer risk related to carbohydrates or the glycemic index, a measure of the effect of a food?s carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. When comparing those who consumed the highest to the lowest amounts, the analysis found no link between colorectal cancer risk and total carbohydrates, glycemic index, or glycemic load, which takes into account the food?s portion size.

Lead author of this study, Dagfinn Aune, also led a major analysis of the literature on breast cancer risk and dietary fiber. We previously talked about those findings with Aune, which you can read here in Cancer Research Update.

Craft a Compelling Offer for Paid Search Marketing | Biznology

Image representing Google AdWords as depicted ...

The best way to motivate a click online is to make a compelling offer and provide an urgent call to action.? This is not news to Internet marketers.? But when it comes to search engine advertising, like Google AdWords, you need to think about your offer and call to action a bit differently.? The secret is coming up with an offer that attracts qualified prospects, to maintain conversion rates?instead of bringing in tire-kickers who are only interested in getting a quick deal, and won?t actually buy.

Two important considerations undergird this point:

  1. You only have 95 characters, spread over 4 lines of type, to play with.
  2. Since you are paying for each click, your ROI depends more on quality than on quantity.

In direct marketing offer theory, this is called managing the ?offer equation,? which says that response quality is inversely related to response quantity.? In other words, the sweeter the offer, the higher the response, and the less likely the respondents are to become profitable customers.?? Conversely, a lower response brings in a more committed prospect, one who is likely to prove more valuable over time?just costlier to acquire.

So the ideal in search engine advertising is to identify an attractive offer that also qualifies.? And, it needs to be very simple, so it can be communicated with minimal investment of your precious 95 characters.

Here are some excellent offers that serve both purposes?simplicity and quality control:

  • Free shipping.? A great way to differentiate yourself in a highly competitive environment.? Free shipping is very appealing to prospective buyers, but because it is only redeemed on purchase, it?s successful in the equation management game.
  • Free trial.? Another classic equation management tactic.? Only people who are serious about your product will be likely to take it on trial.? But you still get the power of the word ?free.?? In the tech world, a free software download has been a proven winner of this type.
  • Free gift with purchase.? Another way to motivate conversion, versus mere click-through, and easy to explain.? But it does take up a bit more real estate than free shipping or free trial.
  • Free information.? Always a popular and productive offer in business markets, where buyers need detailed information as part of their purchase process.? Examples include a free case study, research report, or white paper.? Qualifies beautifully.

To be avoided are generous offers that motivate high response but poor quality.? A free mug or t-shirt, with no strings attached, for example.?? Unless you can otherwise qualify the target with a highly selective keyword or phrase.

Have you come up with a compelling offer to motivate quality responses in B-to-B search engine advertising?? Let?s share ideas.

Senior Year Spring Break ? Israel? ? BUSINESS, INNOVATION ...

Spring Break 2012!

I imagine my spring break experience is very different from that of most of my friends. While they enjoyed the beaches of Mexico and Miami, I spent my time going in and out of offices. I exchanged bathing suits for business casual, a tan for knowledge. You may be asking yourself why a senior like me chose to spend her last spring break on an educational trip, traveling with her teacher and other students two to three years younger. Let me tell you.

Although not my first time in Israel (I?ve been with Taglit as well as my family), I?m experiencing it like I never have before. On my other trips, I?ve prayed at the Wall in Jerusalem, visited a winery in the Golan Heights, climbed Masada, floated in the Dead Sea, enjoyed the nightlife of Tel Aviv, and relaxed on the beaches of Eilat. I could keep going, but the list is exhaustive. I knew about Israeli culture as well as the the geopolitical issues that surround the country, but until I took this course, I was unfamiliar with the innovative and entrepreneurial side of Israel, the side they neglected to show on my previous visits.

Did you know that aside from the United States and China, Israel has the highest number of publicly traded companies on the various exchanges in New York? That close to 300 foreign companies have research and development centers in Israel? That the number of ?Israeli start ups per year are on par with that of all of Europe? I didn?t, at least not until I began this course in January 2012. To benefit both Israel and the United States, I believe that more people need to be aware of all of the unbelievable innovations that are currently occurring in Israel. You can bet that I will be sharing my experience with my friends, family, teachers, employer, and pretty much anyone else who is willing to listen.

This class and this trip to Israel have influenced my life for the better. My understanding of Israel and its economy have grown exponentially. My own career goals have become more defined. In one week, I?ve met some of the most amazing, inspiring, brightest people I have ever met. Do I regret my spring break decision? Not at all. I only wish that I had read Start Up Nation by Saul Singer and Dan Senor two and a half years ago when my parents had asked me to, that I had taken this course one or two years earlier.

Have I and the rest of my class convinced you of how amazing this country is and how vital an understanding of all that is occurring in Israel is. If so, spread the word. Read Start Up Nation. Visit Israel. Do what you can to understand, to make a difference.

Boko Haram rules out further talks with Nigerian govt

A spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram has ruled out further talks with Nigeria's government after preliminary, indirect contacts aimed at ending scores of deadly attacks.

Abul Qaqa, who has claimed to speak on behalf of Boko Haram a number of times in the past, told journalists in a telephone conference late Tuesday that the government could not be trusted.

He did not give details, but a cleric who acted as an intermediary in the indirect talks, which were at a preliminary stage, said last weekend he would no longer do so because leaks to the media by the government showed it was insincere.

"Almighty God has told us repeatedly that the unbelievers will never respect the promises they made," the spokesman said. "As such, henceforth, we would never respect any proposal for dialogue.

"In fact, we have closed all possible doors of negotiation. We would never listen to any call for negotiations. Let the government forces do whatever they feel they can do, and we too would use all the wherewithal at our disposal and do what we can."

He confirmed that Boko Haram was involved in the effort made by the cleric, Datti Ahmed, and that the group had given him their conditions.

Abul Qaqa also claimed there was a previous attempt at dialogue earlier this year that led to the arrest of one of its members in the northern city of Kaduna.

"The first condition we gave was the need for unconditional release of all our members," he said.

"There was an initial meeting between us and the government and in the process, one of our members, Abu Dardaa, was arrested in Kaduna.

"Since then, we never trusted the government. However, following endless pleas by some notable Nigerians, whom we have enormous respect for, we resolved to give another chance."

He said, however, that this second opportunity "was messed up."

A security official said last week Boko Haram had proposed a three-month truce if all of its detained members were released and if the government halted any further arrests. He said the government was looking at the proposal.

A diplomatic source said there had been "real contacts" between the government and Boko Haram through intermediaries.

Boko Haram has been blamed for scores of shootings and bomb blasts, mostly in northern Nigeria, which have killed more than 1,000 people since 2009.

Abul Qaqa said Tuesday "we are optimistic that we would dismantle this government and establish Islamic government in Nigeria."

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for an August suicide attack at the UN headquarters in the capital Abuja which killed 25 people and for coordinated bombings and shootings in Nigeria's second city of Kano on January 20 which left 185 people dead -- its deadliest assault yet.

The group had initially claimed to be fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, but its aims and structure have since become less clear, while its attacks have grown increasingly deadly and sophisticated.

Calls have mounted for talks to take place, with Nigerian authorities seemingly unable to stop attacks blamed on Boko Haram that have shaken Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer.

Feds to probe death of Fla. teen Trayvon Martin

In the wake of growing public outrage, the FBI and Department of Justice are now looking into the deadly shooting of an unarmed black teen in Florida by a neighborhood watch volunteer. NBC's Lilia Luciano reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

In the wake of spreading public outrage, the Justice Department and the FBI have opened an investigation?into the shooting of a black teenager by a Florida neighborhood watch captain who escaped arrest.

More than 435,000 people, many alerted by tweets from celebrities?such as?movie director Spike Lee and musician Wyclef Jean, signed a petition on Change.org, a social action website, calling for the arrest of the shooter, George Zimmerman.

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the FBI announced?on Monday?that they have opened an investigation into the shooting in Florida of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was unarmed when he was killed.

Mom: Trayvon Martin was killed because of 'the color of his skin'

"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," the Justice Department said in a statement.

The campaign to draw attention to the case is the third largest in Change.org's history, and surpassed a petition of about 300,000 signatures credited last year with persuading Bank of America to drop plans for a $5 debit card fee, said Megan Lubin, a Change.org spokeswoman.

The victim's family lawyer, Ben Crump, said public pressure was behind an earlier promise by the Justice Department to review the case. And some Florida legislators are moving to consider a change in the law to prevent a recurrence.

Demand for an arrest
"People all over the world, more than 400,000 people, said we demand you make an arrest. That's what is building pressure to look at it," Crump said.

The shooting occurred February 26 when Zimmerman spotted Martin walking home from buying candy and iced tea at a convenience store.

Zimmerman, patrolling the neighborhood in his car, called the 911 emergency number and reported what he called "a real suspicious guy."

"This guy looks like he's up to no good, or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about," Zimmerman told dispatchers, adding, "These @!$%#s. They always get away."

The dispatcher, hearing heavy breathing on the phone, asked Zimmerman: "Are you following him?"

"Yeah," Zimmerman said.

"Okay, we don't need you to do that," the dispatcher responded.

But several neighbors subsequently called 911 to report a scuffle between Zimmerman and Martin. While some of the callers were still on the phone, cries for help followed by a gunshot can be heard in the background.

"I recognized that (voice) as my baby screaming for help before his life was taken," Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, told Reuters.

?(Zimmerman) was reacting to the color of his skin,?? Fulton,?said Monday on NBC's Today show. ?He committed no crime. My son wasn?t doing anything but walking on the sidewalk, and I just don?t understand why this situation got out of control.??

'Stand your ground'
Police declined to arrest Zimmerman, and turned the case over to prosecutors where it remains under review. Police cited Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, enacted in 2005 and now in effect in at least 16 other states.

Dubbed "Shoot first (ask questions later)" by opponents, the Florida law allows a potential crime victim who is "in fear of great bodily injury" to use deadly force in public places.

The landmark law expanded on legislation, known as the Castle Doctrine, that allowed use of deadly force in defense of "hearth and home." Passed under former Florida Governor Jeb Bush in 2005, it overturned a centuries-old doctrine that required the potential victim to retreat and avoid confrontation if possible, according to Ladd Everitt, spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a Washington-based advocacy group.

"No one could argue that Zimmerman could not have safely retreated and avoided this conflict, and I think that is the critical element here and why these laws are so dangerous," Everitt said. "He (Zimmerman) does not have a duty to retreat in Florida."

Crump said Zimmerman should not be protected under the Stand Your Ground law. "It's illogical, you can claim self defense after you chase and pursue somebody," he said. "That's a courtroom defense. That's not something the police accept on the side of the street."

Five years after Florida's Stand Your Ground law was enacted, a 2010 review by the St. Petersburg Times found that reports of justifiable homicides had tripled, and a majority of cases were excused by prosecutors or the courts. Meanwhile, the petition drive, started by a friend of Trayvon's mother, has been signed by people across the globe from Canada to Thailand, Lubin said.

Celebrity tweets over the weekend made #Trayvon a trending topic on Twitter, she said. Additional celebrities tweeting and posting on Facebook about the case include singers Clay Aiken and John Legend, film director Michael Moore and actress Mia Farrow.

50 years since release of Bob Dylan's debut

John Cohen / Getty Images file

Bob Dylan in New York in 1962.

By Andy Greene, Rolling Stone

When Bob Dylan's self-titled debut LP hit shelves on March 19, 1962, it didn't sound anything like the popular music of the time. It was the height of "The Twist" dance craze, and 11 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart had the word "twist" in the title, including "Dear Lady Twist" by Gary U.S. Bonds, "Twistin' The Night Away" by Sam Cooke, "Hey, Let's Twist" by Joey Dee and the Starlighters," "Twistin' Postman" by the Marvelettes and "Alvin Twist" by the Chipmunks. (A new California group called the Beach Boys reached a new high of Number 77 that week with their first single, "Surfin.'")

To most of America, the Kingston Trio were the embodiment of folk music. The clean-cut, sweet-voiced California group hit Number 25 that week with their cover of Pete Seeger's "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" Dylan was also a fan of Seeger's, but he sounded nothing like the Kingston Trio. The 20-year old singer-songwriter from Hibbing, Minn., had been playing the coffee houses in New York for a little over a year, mostly singing traditional folk songs in a nasal voice that was virtually impossible to imagine hearing on the radio.

It was Columbia record executive John Hammond who saw the huge potential in Dylan. The 51 year old, who famously discovered Billie Holiday and countless other jazz legends, became acquainted with Dylan when he played harmonica at a recording session with folk singer Carolyn Hester. They met during a rehearsal in a Greenwich Village apartment. "We were all seated around a kitchen table, and John was seated next to Bob," Hester recalled to Dylan biographer Howard Sounes in his book "Down The Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan." "Bob starts in on the harmonica and John turns and looks at him and couldn't take his eyes off the great character." His interest grew when he learned that Dylan wrote his own songs.

Right around that time, Dylan opened up for the Greenbriar Boys at Gerde's Folk City and earned a rave review in the New York Times by pop writer Robert Shelton. Hammond didn't need any more convincing; on Oct. 25, 1961, he signed Dylan to a five-year contract. A little more than a month later, they entered the studio together to record Dylan's first album. They cut the whole thing in just six hours (spread across two days) for an estimated $402.

"There was a violent, angry emotion running through me then," Dylan said. "I just played played guitar and harmonica and sang those songs, and that was it. Mr. Hammond asked me if I wanted to sing any of them over again and I said no. I can't see myself singing the same song twice in a row. That's terrible."

Much like his live set at the time, the album consisted mainly of old folk songs, including "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" by Blind Lemon Jefferson, "Highway 51" by Curtis Jones and "Fixin' to Die" by Bukka White. It was his rendition of "The House of The Rising Sun" that caused him trouble in the tight-knit Greenwich Village folk music community. Dave Van Ronk -- one of Dylan's earliest supporters and a huge presence in the Village -- was famous for his arrangement of the traditional tune. "Before going in the studio, he asked, 'Hey Dave, mind if I record your version of "Rising Sun?'" Van Ronk recalled to Dylan biographer Anthony Scaduto. "I said, 'Well, Bobby, I'm going into the studio soon and I'd like to record it.' And later he asked me again and I told him I wanted to record it myself, and he said, 'Oops, I already recorded it and I can't do anything about it because Columbia wants it.' For a period of about two months we didn't speak to each other. He never apologizes, and I give him credit for it."

The album did contain two original songs: "Talkin' New York" and "Song to Woody." The first song recounts Dylan's earliest days in New York when he "got a harmonica job, begun to play/Blowin' my lungs out for a dollar a day." Dylan claims he wrote "Song to Woody," a tribute to his musical hero Woody Guthrie, just weeks after arriving in New York, a trip partially inspired by the fact that Guthrie was living at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey and Dylan wanted to meet him. "('Song to Woody') was written in New York City in the drugstore on 8th Street," he said to Sing Out! magazine in the summer of 1962. "It was one of them freezing days that I came back from Sid and Bob Gleason's in East Orange, New Jersey ... Woody was there that day and it was a February Sunday night ... and I just thought about Woody, I wondered about him, thought harder and wondered harder ... I wrote this song in five minutes ... it's all I got to say."

The album failed to crack the Billboard charts and sold about 5,000 copies that year. Executives around Columbia referred to Dylan as "Hammond's Folly." Undeterred, Hammond brought Dylan back into the studio just one month after the album came out to begin work on his second LP. In the five months after the first album was recorded, Dylan had turned his attention towards political causes. He recorded "The Death of Emmett Till" and "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues" at the first session, and in July of 1962, he returned to Columbia Studio A with a new song called "Blowin' In The Wind." It had been a part of his live show for months, and by the next summer, it would completely transform his life.

Stacy Keibler to Join The X Factor?

If Simon Cowell is going for looks over talent, he's on the right track.

With Britney Spears negotiations reportedly still ongoing, sources now say The X Factor is considering Stacy Keibler for a role on its upcoming second season. In what capacity? It's unclear, although co-host seems most likely.

Stacy Keibler Close Up

An insider cites Keibler's "lack of experience in the music business" as a drawback for making this former WWE Diva a judge, but adds that the beauty "looks fantastic and has bags of charisma." Would this be enough to cast her as emcee?

She would seemingly fit Cowell's criteria, as Simon told reporters a couple weeks ago: “I always wanted a boy and a girl to host the show. And I like hosts who don’t kind of have a hosting background... it’s a different kind of dynamic.”

Darren Criss of Glee was supposedly offered the hosting gig earlier this month but could not fit it into his schedule.

Mice study reveals Alzheimer's antibodies

British scientists have discovered a type of antibody in mice that blocks a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, offering a potential new route to treatment, according to research published on Tuesday.

The antibodies shut down a protein called Dkk1 that in turn stops the formation of amyloid plaque in the brain, a key factor in the progression of Alzheimer's, said the findings in the Journal of Neuroscience.

When this plaque builds up, it leads to a loss of connection between neurons, known as synapses, in the part of the brain known as the hippocampus which handles learning and memory.

"These novel findings raise the possibility that targeting this secreted Dkk1 protein could offer an effective treatment to protect synapses against the toxic effect of amyloid-B," said lead author Patricia Salinas of the University College London Department of Cell and Developmental Biology.

"Importantly, these results raise the hope for a treatment and perhaps the prevention of cognitive decline early in Alzheimer's disease."

The research has only been done in mice and more work is needed to see if it would be relevant in humans.

Previous research has shown that the autopsied brains of people with Alzheimer's disease have higher levels of Dkk1 than normal brains, but scientists were unsure why.

The latest study on mice showed that animals exposed to antibodies against Dkk1 had more of their synapses survive than other Alzheimer's mice that were not given the treatment.

The research was funded by Alzheimer's Research UK and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

There is no cure for Alzheimer's, a progressive brain disease which along with other forms of dementia affects more than 35 million people worldwide.
